What is Vitamin B?
If you’re relatively new to the world of supplements, you’ve likely heard of Vitamin B, but may not be entirely sure what it is.
Well, here’s the answer.
Vitamin B is actually an overarching term that refers to a group of eight water-soluble vitamins.
The B group of vitamins cannot be synthesised by the body, and thus must be obtained from external sources (e.g. plants and meat). Because of this, they are often referred to as ‘essential vitamins’.
Being water-soluble, B Vitamins dissolve in water and are typically found in the watery portions of foodstuffs. Again, being water-soluble, B Vitamins are absorbed quickly via the intestinal tract and enter into the bloodstream.
However, with quick absorption comes quick excretion; meaning you must replenish your B Vitamins on a daily basis.
So, what are these eight B Vitamins? Let’s take a look:
- Vitamin B1 (Thiamin) - particularly important for your digestion system.
- Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) - plays a key role in energy production.
- Vitamin B3 (Niacin) - used (amongst other things) for the support of energy metabolism.
- Vitamin B5 (Pantothenic Acid) - essential for the oxidation of fatty acids.
- Vitamin B6 - important for the production of haemoglobin, a protein that helps your red blood cells transport oxygen.
- Vitamin B7 (Biotin) - sometimes known as Vitamin H, Biotin maintains the health of your skin, hair, eyes, liver, and general nervous system.
- Vitamin B9 (Folate) - used by the body in the formation of DNA.
- Vitamin B12 (Cobalamin) - perhaps the most ‘well known’ of the B Vitamins, B12 acts as a coenzyme in multiple important metabolic pathways.
What does Vitamin B do?
It’s hopefully clear by now that Vitamin B plays a multifaceted role in bodily function and wellbeing.
In fact, the B group of Vitamins do so much, it’d be almost impossible to list everything they do here.
However, the likes of the NHS and the Harvard School of Public Health characterise the role of the B Vitamins as:
‘Helping a variety of enzymes do their jobs’.
Think of the various forms of Vitamin B as ‘catalysts’ that help enzymes perform more efficiently as they turn substances into products that can be used by the body.
What to look for in a Vitamin B supplement
Whilst it’s possible to obtain sufficient amounts of Vitamin B from a healthy, regular diet, many people choose to take Vitamin B supplements.
If you’re intending to go down this route and supplement Vitamin B, what characteristics should you look for in a product?
Contain the active form of the vitamins
This is arguably the most important thing to look for in a Vitamin B supplement - ensure that the supplement you choose has been formulated to include the most appropriate forms of Vitamin B.
For example, here at Supplement Needs, our Vitamin B Complex contains many of the active forms of the individual B Vitamins. For example, Supplement Needs Vitamin B Complex contains Vitamin B6 in the form of Pyridoxal-5-Phosphate (P5P). Likewise, it contains the methylated form of Vitamin B12 - Methylcobalamin.
Using the active forms of vitamins is important as these are the metabolically active forms, most easily absorbed and thus able to be used by the body.
Note - not all vitamin B supplements use the active forms of the B Vitamins. In fact, when it comes to B12 some supplements will use Cyanocobalamin, which is a synthetic form of B12 that the body must convert to use.
Contains ingredients that enhance absorption
Whilst your body is able to absorb B Vitamins via the small intestine, the very best supplements will often include additional ingredients that give this absorption a ‘helping hand’.
For example, here at Supplement Needs, our Vitamin B Complex supplement has been formulated by Dr. Dean St Mart PhD to include BioPerine (at 2 mg per 1 tablet serving).
BioPerine is a regulated, patented extract of black pepper. More specifically, it is a standardised extract of piperine (at 95% minimum). Piperine is an amide alkaloid compound that not only has powerful antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, but may assist absorption of B Vitamins.

Transparently dosed
Whilst it may be tempting to pick up a cheap Vitamin B12 supplement or Vitamin B complex from the supermarket, do you really know what they contain?
Many cheap Vitamin B supplements are typically vague about their ingredients, and the doses of those ingredients.
As you’ll have just read, it’s important that you take a supplement that contains the active form of vitamins. That’s why here at Supplement Needs, all our Vitamin B supplements are completely transparent in terms of their ingredients, and the dosage of those ingredients.
